What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 18: a baker, a butter cheese and eggs, an elevator operator, a gardener, a laborer and a mechanic, among others. Five are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Shaughnessy (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J Sangster at 1746 Alberni Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Sangster there as the householder, a baker, with Jack Sangster, a fur cutter at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists Laura Sangster at 4430 Angus Drive, widow of W F, with Lorna I Sangster, widow of W.

Mrs E Sangster is listed at 2441 Brock Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ethel Sangster there as the householder, widow of D C. R Sangster is listed at 1349 East 28th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Reginald Sangster there as the householder, a truckman at the Customs.

F Sangster is listed at 1651 East 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Sangster there as the householder, a mechanic at Nunn & Thomson. The 1940 name section lists Alex Sangster at 569 Hamilton Street, an elevator operator at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs I Sangster, a butter, at 1122 Nelson Street.

In 1940 the directory lists H Sangster at 1867 West 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry Sangster there as the householder, a gardener.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M C Sangster, in apartments, at 2449 West 3rd Avenue. By 1940 it is C Sangster; the 1940 line is marked * too. In 1940 the directory lists R C Sangster, in engineers, at 1925 West Georgia Street.

Today

4430 Angus Drive, 998 Thurlow, 3560 West 18th, 720 West 26th and 1867 West 37th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2441 Brock (1963) and 1349 East 28th (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1746 Alberni, 1651 East 6th, 569 Hamilton, 1122 Nelson, 2449 West 3rd and 1925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
