The Sagers
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses
The directories print eleven people named Sager at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Seager. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Sagers at 1578 West 11th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for ten of the eleven: a school teacher (2), an apprentice, a clerk, a nurse, an on active service and a president, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview (2), Downtown, Mount Pleasant, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Olive Seager at 1734 Comox Street, a stenographer at the BC Government. J E Sager is listed at 857 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John E Sager there as the householder, a school teacher. The 1940 name section lists Albert Sager at 4574 Langara Avenue, on active service.
In 1940 the directory lists C Seager at 780 Richards Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles Seager there as the householder, a warehouseman. The 1940 name section lists Shirley Sager at 1203 West 11th Avenue, a nurse.
Mrs A Sager is listed at 1578 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Annie Sager there as the householder, widow of F, with Frank H Sager, a president at Robson Transfer, and Zeta S Sager, a school teacher. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Sager at 3954 West 29th Avenue, a teacher at the St Georges School.
In 1940 the directory lists E J Sager at 3569 West 32nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward J Sager there as the householder, a clerk at the Canadian Government, with Peter Sager, an apprentice at Smith Marking Device.
Today
857 East 14th, 4574 Langara and 3569 West 32nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 780 Richards (2008) and 1578 West 11th (1958) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1734 Comox, 1203 West 11th and 3954 West 29th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
