The Rosses

In the city directories 1940 · six people at four addresses

The directories print six people named Ross at four addresses in 1940, all on West 4th Avenue. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Rosses at 3643 West 4th in 1940. The directories print the name on 151 other streets too, all listed on the Ross name's own page.

The name section prints a trade for four of the six: an agent, a caretaker, a manager and a proprietor. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert E Ross at 2480 West 4th Avenue as the householder, a caretaker at The Marodon. A Ross is listed at 2526 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Andrew Ross there as the householder, an agent at Greens (Canada) Ltd.

L R Ross is listed at 2546 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lamont R Ross there as the householder, a manager at Kresge's. Miss B A Ross is listed at 3643 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bernice A Ross there as the householder, proprietor of Endoline Lending Library and Maryanne's Home Cooking, with Anna M Ross, widow of H E.

Today

2526 West 4th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1932 by the City's record; 2546 West 4th (1990) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2480 West 4th and 3643 West 4th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
