What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the eight: a laborer, a maid, a salesman and a saleswoman.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists M B Rosen at 2696 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists M Barnett Rosen there as the householder, a salesman at the Hudson's Bay Company. The 1940 name section lists Edward Rosen at 551 East 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sylvia Rosen at 1165 East 29th Avenue, a saleswoman at Hastings Furniture.
In 1940 the directory lists E Rosen at 339 East 65th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Emil Rosen there as the householder, a laborer at Canadian White Pine. In 1940 the directory lists H H Rosen, a manufacturers agent, at 323 Homer Street. The 1940 name section lists Edith Rosen at 6361 Larch Street, a maid for C T Proske.
In 1940 the directory lists J Rosen at 1543 West 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Rosen there as the householder, of Third Avenue Grocery, with Mrs Sophia Rosen, of Third Avenue Grocery.
Today
551 East 12th and 6361 Larch still have their buildings from before 1946; 2696 Adanac (1996), 1165 East 29th (1979) and 339 East 65th (1984) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 323 Homer and 1543 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
