What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: an assistant filer, a building contractor, a carpenter, a clerk, an engineer and a salesman, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Marpole and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A Riggs at 2119 Cypress Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alex Riggs there as the householder, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Harry Riggs at 296 Keefer Street, an engineer. The 1940 name section lists Alex Riggs at 2403 Trafalgar Street, a building contractor.
In 1940 the directory lists T Riggs at 1785 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Riggs there as the householder, a foreman at R&H Sawmill, with Thomas E Riggs, an assistant filer at R&H Sawmill. In 1940 the directory lists J A Riggs at 2046 West 45th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James A Riggs there as the householder, a salesman, with Dorothy E Riggs, a clerk for Kelly Douglas.
In 1940 the directory lists Dr H W Riggs at 926 West 59th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Margaret Riggs there, a technician. In 1940 the directory lists H W Riggs, a physician, at 925 West Georgia Street. By 1940 it is Miss A S C Riggs, a physician.
Today
2046 West 45th (2008) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2119 Cypress, 296 Keefer, 2403 Trafalgar, 1785 West 12th, 926 West 59th and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
