What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a clerk (2), a conductor, a foreman, a printer, a proprietor and a school teacher, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A R Rigby at 7449 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur R Rigby there as the householder, a clerk at Goodyear Tire & Rubber. The 1940 name section lists Thomas B Rigby at 314 Cambie Street, a clerk.

E J Rigby is listed at 778 East 17th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ernest J Rigby there as the householder, of Belmont Service & Alert Car Service. J Rigby is listed at 876 East 18th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Rigby there as the householder, with Marion Rigby, a school teacher.

R E Rigby is listed at 976 East 27th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert E Rigby there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. R Rigby is listed at 2791 Graveley Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Richard Rigby there as the householder, a foreman at Canada Packers.

J Rigby is listed at 2440 Heather Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Rigby there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Rigby at 1180 Melville Street, a printer.

In 1940 the directory lists T Rigby at 4512 Prince Edward Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Rigby there as the householder, with Elizabeth Rigby. In 1940 the directory lists F J Rigby at 3990 West 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick J Rigby there as the householder, a stockkeeper.

In 1940 the directory lists J Rigby at 1966 West 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Rigby there as the householder, retired, with William J Rigby, proprietor of Diamond Fuel.

Today

3990 West 16th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1940 by the City's record; 778 East 17th (1980), 876 East 18th (1982), 976 East 27th (1989) and 2791 Graveley (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 7449 Angus Drive, 314 Cambie, 2440 Heather, 1180 Melville, 4512 Prince Edward and 1966 West 2nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
