What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a clerk, a helper, a lathe crane operator, a maid, a millworker and an operator, among others. Two of them worked for BC Plywoods. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Sunset (4), Arbutus Ridge, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Susie W Rempel at 1629 East 10th Avenue, widow of A J. G J Rempel is listed at 462 East 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George J Rempel there as the householder, a millworker at BC Plywoods.

H G Rempel is listed at 542 East 47th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry G Rempel there as the householder, a lathe crane operator at BC Plywoods, with D Rempel, a sawyer for B C Plywoods. G Rempel is listed at 2020 East 48th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Rempel there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Helen J Rempel at 479 East 49th Avenue, with John J Rempel, a clerk at Canadian Westinghouse. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Rempel at 545 East 49th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Anne Rempel at 1143 Pacific Street.

In 1940 the directory lists G S Rempel at 617 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Gerhard S Rempel there as the householder, with Gerald Rempel, a helper for A O McColl, and Helen G Rempel, an operator at the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists H W Rempel at 2399 West 35th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Herbert W Rempel there as the householder, a salesman for Kelly Douglas.

The 1940 name section lists Mary J Rempel at 2327 West 49th Avenue, a maid for M J Hodge.

Today

1629 East 10th, 542 East 47th, 479 East 49th and 545 East 49th still have their buildings from before 1946; 462 East 44th (1993), 2020 East 48th (1985) and 2399 West 35th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1143 Pacific, 617 West 11th and 2327 West 49th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
