The Rawsons

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Rawson at nine addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Rawsons at 3637 West 3rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a bricklayer (2), a carpenter, a clerk, a dressmaker, a finisher and a warehouseman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G F Rawson at 3776 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists George F Rawson there as the householder, a clerk at General Paint. In 1940 the directory lists C H Rawson at 1107 East 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles H Rawson there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists H B Rawson at 3409 East 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert B Rawson there as the householder, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists W O Rawson at 1828 East 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred O Rawson there as the householder, a bricklayer.

In 1940 the directory lists W B Rawson at 2144 Graveley Street. The 1940 name section lists William B Rawson there as the householder, a warehouseman at Ellison Milling, with George R Rawson, a bricklayer. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Rawson at 1125 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Marie Rawson there as the householder, widow of T S.

The 1940 name section lists Harry Rawson at 647 Jackson Avenue, retired. D C Rawson is listed at 866 Pacific Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Delmar C Rawson there as the householder, a finisher at Mac's Photo Service.

J C Rawson is listed at 3637 West 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John C Rawson there as the householder, with Dorothy Rawson, and Marjorie E Rawson, a dressmaker.

Today

3776 Blenheim, 1107 East 19th, 2144 Graveley and 3637 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 3409 East 3rd (2006) and 1828 East 6th (1999) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1125 Haro, 647 Jackson and 866 Pacific, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
