What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a salesman (2), an engineer, an operator, a photographer finisher, a proprietor and a shipper, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Renfrew-Collingwood (3), Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists B Ransom, rooms to let, at 1052 Barclay Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bertram Ransom there as the householder, a salesman at Fleck Bros. In 1940 the directory lists A B Ransom at 4270 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section lists Alfred B Ransom there as the householder, a salesman at the Bostitch Sales & Service.

In 1940 the directory lists F V Ransom at 4612 Duchess Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederick V Ransom there as the householder, a shipper. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M J Ransom at 1051 Howe Street. The 1940 name section lists Maude J Ransom there as the householder, widow of I, with Earl J Ransom, a photographer finisher.

The 1940 name section lists Vera L Ransom at 3895 Quebec Street, an operator for E Lipsett. Mrs L Ransom is listed at 715 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Louise Ransom there as the householder.

C W Ransom is listed at 5107 Ruby Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Ransom there as the householder, retired. C W Ransom is listed at 5004 Rupert Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Ransom there as the householder, a waiter.

J Ransom is listed at 2420 West 45th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jack Ransom there as the householder, an engineer. W J Ransom is listed at 2651 West 5th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William J Ransom there as the householder, proprietor of Oak Dairy.

Today

3895 Quebec, 2420 West 45th and 2651 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4270 Blenheim (2016), 5107 Ruby (2001) and 5004 Rupert (2004) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1052 Barclay, 4612 Duchess, 1051 Howe and 715 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
