What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a carpenter (2), a conductor (2), a decorator, an employee and a stenographer. Two of them worked for BC Electric Railway.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Riley Park (2), South Cambie (2), Fairview and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J J Radelet at 2210 Balaclava Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James J Radelet there as the householder, with Don Radelet, who worked for Restmore. In 1940 the directory lists A H Radelet at 1612 Commercial Drive.
G W Radelet is listed at 2115 Ferndale Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Gordon W Radelet there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. J J Radelet is listed at 2440 Heather Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Joseph J Radelet there, a carpenter.
L Radelet is listed at 595 West 16th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leon Radelet there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, with Kathleen M Radelet, a stenographer. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred H Radelet at 242 West 20th Avenue as the householder, a carpenter.
In 1940 the directory lists A H Radelet at 146 West 21st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert H Radelet there as the householder, a contractor, with Alice Radelet, a decorator. In 1940 the directory lists R Radelet at 562 West 24th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert W Radelet there as the householder, who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company.
Today
2210 Balaclava, 1612 Commercial Drive, 2115 Ferndale, 146 West 21st and 562 West 24th still have their buildings from before 1946; 242 West 20th (2002) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2440 Heather and 595 West 16th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
