A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Powerses

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at nine addresses

The directories print 13 people named Powers at nine addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Powerses at 2031 Macdonald in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 13: a carpenter, a class, a clerk, a dentist, a master mariner and a stenographer. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C A Powers, a dentist, at 404 Abbott Street. C A Powers is listed at 1091 Broughton Street in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Charles A Powers there as the householder, a dentist.

S B Powers is listed at 1617 East 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Scott B Powers there as the householder, retired. A E Powers is listed at 395 East 56th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Powers there as the householder, a carpenter.

Mrs E Powers is listed at 531 Hamilton Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Powers there as the householder, with Elizabeth J Powers, widow of J W. Mrs E J Powers is listed at 2031 Macdonald Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ella J Powers there as the householder, widow of T J, with John C Powers, a clerk at the Liquor Control Board, Mona L Powers, a stenographer at T Connors Diamond Drilling, and Walter T Powers, a student at Barrow Wade Guthrie.

The 1940 name section lists Clayton Powers at 2649 West 3rd Avenue, a class at the Sun. In 1940 the directory lists F J Powers at 3372 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank J Powers there as the householder, a master mariner at Union Oil. The 1940 name section lists Michael Powers at 1935 Whyte Avenue.

Today

404 Abbott, 1091 Broughton, 1617 East 12th, 2031 Macdonald, 2649 West 3rd and 3372 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946; 395 East 56th (2015) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 531 Hamilton, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 1935 Whyte, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
