What they did

The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 15: an assistant manager, a clerk, a compositor, an elevator mechanic, an elevator operator and a finisher, among others. Two of them worked for Sun. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (4), Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists V Poulter at 589 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Vincent H Poulter there as the householder, a clerk at London & Lancashire Insurance. In 1940 the directory lists W T Poulter at 1752 East 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William T Poulter there as the householder, a longshoreman, with Dorothy G Poulter, an elevator operator at the Birks Building.

The 1940 name section lists Leslie R Poulter at 1758 East 13th Avenue, in mailing at the Sun. S C Poulter is listed at 765 East 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Stan C Poulter there as the householder, a laundryman at the Vancouver General Hospital, with Ernest H S Poulter, and Richard Poulter, a finisher at Mount Pleasant Shoe Repair.

W J Poulter is listed at 2169 East 33rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William J Poulter there as the householder, an elevator mechanic at Speneers, with Florence D Poulter, a stenographer at Mutual Fire Insurance. Today

1752 East 13th, 2169 East 33rd and 3622 West 29th still have their buildings from before 1946; 765 East 29th (1965) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 589 Burrard, 1758 East 13th, 1053 Haro, 1946 McLean Drive, 840 Nelson, 653 West Broadway and 1913 Yew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
