The Pillings
In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at ten addresses
The directories print twelve people named Pilling at ten addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Pillings at 974 Cardero in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a confectioner, an employee, a general service manager, a miner, a musician and an operator, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Beatrice Pilling at 974 Cardero Street, with Ralph Pilling, and Vivian Pilling, who worked for Restmore. A Pilling is listed at 530 East 17th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert Pilling there as the householder, an operator.
S Pilling is listed at 1447 East 21st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Pilling there as the householder, a watchman at Jones Tent & Awning. The 1940 name section lists Reginald Pilling at 1311 Richards Street.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Pilling at 906 Salsbury Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Marion Pilling there as the householder, widow of J H. The 1940 name section lists William Pilling at 2425 West 2nd Avenue, a musician.
Mrs C S Pilling is listed at 3018 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Cath S Pilling there as the householder. H Pilling is listed at 2902 West 34th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Pilling there as the householder, a general service manager for A W Carter.
The 1940 name section lists Andrew Pilling at 1656 West Georgia Street, a miner. In 1940 the directory lists W Pilling, a confectioner, at 1200 Woodland Drive. The 1940 name section lists William Pilling there, a confectioner.
Today
974 Cardero and 906 Salsbury Drive still have their buildings from before 1946; 530 East 17th (1984) and 2425 West 2nd (1959) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1311 Richards, 3018 West 2nd, 2902 West 34th, 1656 West Georgia and 1200 Woodland Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 1447 East 21st, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
