The Penningtons
In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses
The directories print 13 people named Pennington at eight addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Penningtons at 4830 Hudson in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a cashier, a conductor, a department manager, a salesman, a saleswoman and a school vice-principal, among others. Two of them worked for Spencer's. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Kitsilano and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists F W Pennington at 1697 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick W Pennington there, a school vice-principal. In 1940 the directory lists E Pennington at 1219 East 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Pennington there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway.
In 1940 the directory lists F G Pennington at 1302 East 31st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Pennington there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists J W Pennington at 1717 East 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James W Pennington there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists W Pennington at 2157 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Pennington there as the householder, a yardman at the CNR, with Muriel Pennington, a stenographer at Begg Motor. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A M Pennington at 2055 Grant Street. The 1940 name section lists Ada M Pennington there as the householder, widow of W G, with Lucy M Pennington, a saleswoman at Woodward's.
In 1940 the directory lists Miss J Pennington at 4830 Hudson Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jessie Pennington there as the householder, a department manager at Spencer's, with Clare Pennington, and Madge Pennington, a cashier at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists C Pennington at 2237 West 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Charles Pennington there as the householder, a salesman.
Today
1697 East 22nd, 1302 East 31st and 2055 Grant still have their buildings from before 1946; 1219 East 28th (1995), 2157 East 5th (2004) and 4830 Hudson (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1717 East 3rd and 2237 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
