What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a salesman (3), a manager, a mechanic and a waiter. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano, Marpole, Riley Park, South Cambie, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Florence M Paxton at 5011 Collingwood Street, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists William Paxton at 365 East 47th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists J D Paxton at 1234 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists John D Paxton there as the householder, retired, with William J Paxton, a salesman at Standard Oil.

In 1940 the directory lists E R Paxton at 71 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists E Reginald Paxton there as the householder, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries. In 1940 the directory lists J E Paxton at 566 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph E Paxton there as the householder, a mechanic at Reliance Fuel & Heating, with Harold Paxton, a salesman at Western Auto Supplies.

In 1940 the directory lists C C Paxton at 1778 West 57th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles C Paxton there as the householder, a manager at Reliance Fuel & Heating and of S&P Finance Co. In 1940 the directory lists J A Paxton at 2105 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joseph A Paxton there as the householder, a waiter.

The 1940 name section lists John L Paxton at 1541 West Broadway.

Today

71 West 18th and 1778 West 57th still have their buildings from before 1946; 365 East 47th (1993), 566 West 23rd (2003) and 1541 West Broadway (1955) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5011 Collingwood, 1234 Robson and 2105 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
