What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a waiter (3), a clerk, a cook, a driver, a furrier and a salesman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Strathcona (3), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Tony Pappas at 403 East Hastings Street, a waiter for Rex Cafe. Mrs H Pappas is listed at 504 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Hilda Pappas there as the householder, a clerk at Pacific Coast Tobacco. T Pappas, a furrier, is listed at 850 Granville Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists Pappas (no first name printed) at 540 Helmcken Street. The 1940 name section lists Pappas there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Peter Pappas at 928 Main Street, a cook at Province Cafe. The 1940 name section lists George E Pappas at 1906 Nelson Street, a waiter at the Causeway Inn.

In 1940 the directory lists H Pappas at 4950 Quilchena Crescent; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). G L Pappas is listed at 1250 Salsbury Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George L Pappas there as the householder, a salesman at National Bakery.

T Pappas is listed at 4298 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Theo Pappas there as the householder, a furrier, with Theo Pappas Jr. H Pappas is listed at 1536 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Pappas there as the householder, a waiter.

Today

403 East Hastings, 504 East Hastings, 540 Helmcken, 928 Main and 4298 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946, 540 Helmcken on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1906 Nelson (1959) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 850 Granville, 4950 Quilchena Crescent, 1250 Salsbury Drive, 1536 West 4th, 2256 West 8th and 221 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
