What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 14: a proprietor (2), a warehouseman (2), a hairdresser, a longshoreman and a salesman. Four are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Grandview-Woodland, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A H Oakes at 1521 Commercial Drive. Mrs C A Oakes is listed at 2913 East Georgia Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Christina A Oakes there as the householder, widow of J.

M V Oakes is listed at 1425 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Maxwell V Oakes there as the householder, a warehouseman at Canada Cycle & Motor. J W Oakes is listed at 1009 Homer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists J Wesley Oakes there as the householder, a longshoreman.

Mrs J E Oakes is listed at 813 Pacific Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Josephine E Oakes there as the householder, widow of R A. Mrs S J Oakes is listed at 3341 Venables Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Sarah J Oakes there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Ethel Oakes at 1923 Waterloo Street, a hairdresser at Duart Beauty Salon, with Susan Oakes, a widow. In 1940 the directory lists J W Oakes at 2695 West 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James W Oakes there as the householder, proprietor of Oakes Agencies, with Ray W Oakes, a salesman at Oakes Agencies, and Stan J Oakes, a student.

In 1940 the directory lists C J Oakes at 1825 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Cyril J Oakes there as the householder, a warehouseman at Kloepfer Hardware. The 1940 name section lists Cecil L Oakes at 3215 Yukon Street, proprietor of The Oakies, with Hannah Oakes, a widow.

Today

1521 Commercial Drive, 1425 Haro and 1923 Waterloo still have their buildings from before 1946, 1923 Waterloo on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2913 East Georgia (1994) and 1009 Homer (2005) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 813 Pacific, 3341 Venables, 2695 West 2nd, 1825 West 4th and 3215 Yukon, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under O. Want a name removed? Tell us.
