What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: an assistant secretary, a conductor, a driver, a laborer, a laundress and a logger, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Riley Park, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists D P Nolan at 3234 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Daniel P Nolan there as the householder, a driver at Holmes & Wilson. In 1940 the directory lists J H Nolan at 821 East 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John H Nolan there as the householder, a laborer, with Harry Nolan, a tile setter.
In 1940 the directory lists D L Nolan at 615 East 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David L Nolan there as the householder, a conductor at the CNR. The 1940 name section lists John H Nolan at 1956 East 52nd Avenue, a logger, with Mona Nolan, widow of A. The 1940 name section lists Dorothy Nolan at 64 East 6th Avenue, a laundress at Family Service Laundry.
In 1940 the directory lists F J Nolan at 540 Helmcken Street. The 1940 name section lists F J Nolan there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Frank Nolan at 1318 Kingsway, an assistant secretary at the Sound Social Club.
Mrs S Nolan is listed at 1058 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sara Nolan there as the householder, widow of A. The 1940 name section lists C G Nolan at 518 Richards Street, retired.
Today
64 East 6th, 540 Helmcken, 1058 Nelson and 518 Richards still have their buildings from before 1946, 540 Helmcken, 1058 Nelson and 518 Richards on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3234 Adanac (2021) and 615 East 19th (1979) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 821 East 12th, 1956 East 52nd and 1318 Kingsway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under N. Want a name removed? Tell us.
