The Nickersons

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Nickerson at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Nickersons at 1849 Creelman in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a clerk (2), a driver, an insurance agent, a mechanic, a postmaster and a saleswoman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Shaughnessy (2), West End (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Carl B Nickerson at 1216 Alberni Street, an insurance agent. The 1940 name section lists William D Nickerson at 4750 Angus Drive. In 1940 the directory lists F G Nickerson at 1849 Creelman Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Francis G Nickerson there as the householder, a postmaster at the BC Government, with David A Nickerson, a clerk for F J Bossons, and Mary F G Nickerson, a clerk at the Vancouver General Hospital.

In 1940 the directory lists E Nickerson at 414 East 17th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Nickerson there as the householder, a shipper at Cowan-Dodson. In 1940 the directory lists G A Nickerson at 2769 Franklin Street. The 1940 name section lists George A Nickerson there as the householder, a welder at the BC Electric Railway, with Jennie M Nickerson, a stenographer for W H Malkin.

In 1940 the directory lists C B Nickerson at 4469 Osler Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clinton B Nickerson there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Kath Nickerson at 1973 Robson Street, a saleswoman at Traer & Dickie.

C J Nickerson is listed at 408 Vernon Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Clif J Nickerson there as the householder, a driver. F P Nickerson is listed at 2415 West 5th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick P Nickerson there as the householder, a mechanic at D McLean Motor.

Today

4750 Angus Drive, 1849 Creelman, 414 East 17th, 2769 Franklin and 4469 Osler still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1216 Alberni, 1973 Robson, 408 Vernon Drive and 2415 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under N. Want a name removed? Tell us.
