What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a proprietor (2), an engineer, a laborer, a maid and a warehouseman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Shaughnessy, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Richard F M Mutter at 1160 Broughton Street. A C Mutter is listed at 298 East 46th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Arthur C Mutter there as the householder, a warehouseman at Canadian Marconi.

Miss J Mutter is listed at 2004 Kingsway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jean Mutter there as the householder, proprietor of Kway Dairy. The 1940 name section lists Janet Mutter at 1351 Laurier Avenue, a maid for Dr O S Large. The 1940 name section lists Eli Mutter at 645 Main Street.

H W Muter is listed at 2975 Oak Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists H Watson Muter there as the householder, an engineer. J Mutter is listed at 3484 Welwyn Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Mutter there as the householder, a laborer.

F Mutter is listed at 46 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Mutter there as the householder, proprietor of Peerless Bakery, with Freda M Mutter, a waitress at Blue Boy, and Frederick W Mutter.

Today

46 West 11th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record and on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1160 Broughton (1969), 2004 Kingsway (1959), 1351 Laurier (2014), 2975 Oak (2016) and 3484 Welwyn (1993) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 298 East 46th and 645 Main, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
