The Monroes

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Monroe at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Monro. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Monroes at 1020 Nicola in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a stenographer (2), a carpenter, a delivery contractor, an engineer, a salesman and a school teacher. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Shaughnessy (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Mount Pleasant and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C W Monro at 1922 East 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Claude W Monro there as the householder, a carpenter, with Elizabeth M Monro, a salesman at Woolworths. In 1940 the directory lists C Monroe at 2050 East 39th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles Monroe there as the householder, retired.

The 1940 name section lists John Y Monroe at 820 East Pender Street, an engineer. The 1940 name section lists Jessie M Monro at 1889 Haro Street, a stenographer at the BC Government. In 1940 the directory lists Miss E Monro at 1020 Nicola Street. The 1940 name section lists Effie Monro there as the householder, with Dorothy A Monro, a stenographer for London Life.

The 1940 name section lists Edith Monro at 4209 Osler Street as the householder, widow of A S. E H Monroe is listed at 4638 Pine Crescent in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. In 1940 the directory lists J W Monroe at 3031 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists John W Monroe there as the householder, a delivery contractor at the Sun.

In 1940 the directory lists J L Monroe at 3223 West 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists J Lewis Monroe there as the householder, a school teacher.

Today

1922 East 33rd, 4638 Pine Crescent and 3223 West 37th still have their buildings from before 1946, 3223 West 37th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2050 East 39th (2019) and 4209 Osler (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 820 East Pender, 1889 Haro, 1020 Nicola and 3031 Quebec, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
