The Mellishes

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Mellish at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Mellishes at 2506 West 7th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a barrister, a clerk, a commercial artist, a maintenanceman, a meat cutter and a school teacher, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F E Mellish at 1609 Cypress Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick E Mellish there as the householder, a meat cutter at Woodward's. In 1940 the directory lists A J B Mellish, a barrister, at 193 East Hastings Street.

A W Mellish is listed at 2144 East Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Albert W Mellish there as the householder, a commercial artist. The 1940 name section lists George R Mellish at 750 Granville Street.

In 1940 the directory lists A Mellish at 2317 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Mellish there as the householder, retired, with Charlotte M Mellish, a seamstress at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists C W Mellish at 904 West 21st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles W Mellish there as the householder, a maintenanceman at the BC Telephone.

In 1940 the directory lists J McD Mellish at 3344 West 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John McD Mellish there as the householder, a clerk at Imperial Oil. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M W Mellish at 2797 West 32nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mabel W Mellish there, widow of C E.

In 1940 the directory lists A J B Mellish at 2506 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur J B Mellish there as the householder, a barrister, with M Violet Mellish, a stenographer, and Margery E Mellish, a school teacher.

Today

1609 Cypress, 3344 West 28th and 2506 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2797 West 32nd (2014) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 193 East Hastings, 2144 East Pender, 750 Granville, 2317 West 10th and 904 West 21st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
