The Meehans

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at ten addresses

The directories print twelve people named Meehan at ten addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Mehan. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Meehans at 2317 Eton in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a proprietor (2), a timberman (2), an apprentice, a finisher, a janitor and a laborer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (3), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J E Meehan at 3530 Commercial Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John E Meehan there as the householder, a janitor at the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists F R Mehan at 2317 Eton Street. The 1940 name section lists F Robert Mehan there as the householder, with Floyd D Mehan, a finisher at Harwood Chair, and Francis E Mehan, a laborer at the CPR.

In 1940 the directory lists M J Meehan, rooms to let, at 866 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists Michael J Meehan there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists J Meehan at 1840 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists John Meehan there as the householder, a locomotive engineer at the CNR, with John Meehan, proprietor of The Band Box.

In 1940 the directory lists W M Meehan at 1960 Waterloo Street. The 1940 name section lists William M Meehan there as the householder, a timberman. In 1940 the directory lists J P Meehan at 3695 West 16th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists J Peter Meehan there as the householder, proprietor of J P Meehan & Co.

J Mehan is listed at 3726 West 27th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Mehan there as the householder, a salesman at Standard Electric & Radio. B Meehan is listed at 2285 West 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bernard Meehan there as the householder, retired.

Today

3530 Commercial, 1960 Waterloo and 3457 West 20th still have their buildings from before 1946; 825 West 23rd (1990), 3726 West 27th (2017) and 2285 West 6th (1965) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2317 Eton, 866 Hornby, 1840 Robson and 3695 West 16th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
