A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The McSavaneys
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at six addresses
The directories print ten people named McSavaney at six addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four McSavaneys at 24 East 11th in 1940.

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (3), Sunset (2) and Killarney. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W McSavaney at 24 East 11th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William McSavaney there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, with Dorothea J McSavaney, John R McSavaney, a helper at Empire Box, and M William McSavaney. In 1940 the directory lists R McSavaney at 6 East 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Robert McSavaney there as the householder, a branch manager at Sterling Food Markets.
In 1940 the directory lists C McSavaney at 962 East 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clarence McSavaney there as the householder, a bookkeeper at W Holt & Son, with Charlotte McSavaney, a laundress at Nelsons Laundries. In 1940 the directory lists C D McSavaney at 3214 East 45th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clif D McSavaney there as the householder, a branch manager at B&K Economy Cash Stores.
In 1940 the directory lists J McSavaney at 535 East 48th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James McSavaney there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, with Irene M McSavaney, who worked for the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists F G McSavaney at 429 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G McSavaney there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway.
Today
962 East 14th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 535 East 48th (1982) and 429 East 49th (1999) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 24 East 11th, 6 East 14th and 3214 East 45th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
