A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The McPhedrans
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses
The directories print eleven people named McPhedran at six addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three McPhedrans at 1011 Richelieu in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a boilermaker, a clerk, a director, a fitter, a mill hand and a saleswoman. Two of them worked for B-K Mill. Three are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Shaughnessy, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists N R McPhedran at 1629 East 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists N Ross McPhedran there as the householder, a clerk at the B-K Mill. The 1940 name section lists Ian McPhedran at 1346 Pendrell Street, a mill hand at the B-K Mill, with Margaret McPhedran, widow of N.
Miss M E McPhedran is listed at 1011 Richelieu Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary E McPhedran there as the householder, a director for Family Welfare, with Cath McPhedran, widow of J. W M McPhedran is listed at 2320 Vine Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William M McPhedran there as the householder, a fitter at the Vancouver Iron Works.
Mrs M McPhedran is listed at 3887 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Marion McPhedran there as the householder, widow of J, with Miss I McPhedran, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company. C McPhedran is listed at 2385 West 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Colin McPhedran there as the householder, a boilermaker at the Burrard Dry Dock, with Evelyn V McPhedran.
Today
1629 East 10th, 1011 Richelieu and 3887 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1346 Pendrell (1951) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2320 Vine and 2385 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
