What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a deckhand, a driver, a postman, a warper and a watchmaker. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Marpole, Renfrew-Collingwood and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W J McKinley at 5825 Balsam Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William J McKinley there as the householder, a watchmaker at Birks, with Mavis C McKinley, a warper for Gordon Campbell. In 1940 the directory lists McKinley (no first name printed) at 601 Denman Street. The 1940 name section lists McKinley (no first name printed) there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists H L McKinley at 2429 East 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Hugh L McKinley there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Frances M McKinley at 2256 East 30th Avenue, with Lyle M McKinley, a deckhand.
G McKinley is listed at 1905 East 36th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George McKinley there as the householder. A T McKinley is listed at 1363 Franklin Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists A Tannihill McKinley there as the householder, a postman.
The 1940 name section lists S McKinley at 862 Howe Street. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E E McKinley at 8250 Hudson Street. The 1940 name section lists Emma E McKinley there as the householder, widow of C D.
In 1940 the directory lists C H McKinley at 2188 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles H McKinley there as the householder, a driver at Terminal Cartage.
Today
2256 East 30th, 1905 East 36th and 2188 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2429 East 28th (1978) and 8250 Hudson (1993) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5825 Balsam, 601 Denman, 1363 Franklin and 862 Howe, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
