What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: a clerk, a cook, a manager, a motorman, a sawyer and a stenographer, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M McHardy, rooms to let, at 1205 Bute Street. G S McHardy is listed at 1751 East 4th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gordon S McHardy there as the householder, a cook at the City of Vancouver, with Alex G McHardy, a supervisor at American Can. M McHardy is listed at 1877 Haro Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists E J MacHardy at 918 Keefer Street. The 1940 name section lists Minnie McHardy at 5612 Ormidale Street, a stenographer. In 1940 the directory lists M McHardy at 1840 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists Malcolm McHardy there as the householder, a manager at the King George Apartments who kept rooms to let.

In 1940 the directory lists G B McHardy at 5368 Ross Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George B McHardy there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, with George W McHardy, a warehouseman, and Margaret McHardy, a waitress at Henri's Charcoal Grill. In 1940 the directory lists W A G McHardy at 1885 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William A G McHardy there as the householder, a sawyer at BC Fir.

In 1940 the directory lists J T McHardy at 231 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John T McHardy there as the householder, a clerk at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists W McHardy at 2065 William Street. The 1940 name section lists William McHardy there as the householder, with Beaton McHardy.

Today

1751 East 4th, 1877 Haro and 2065 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 5612 Ormidale (2016), 5368 Ross (2003) and 231 West 23rd (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1205 Bute, 918 Keefer, 1840 Robson and 1885 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
