What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a fireman, a housekeeper, a laborer, an optometrist, a porter and a quartermaster, among others. Three of them worked for CPR.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (4), Strathcona (3), Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

In 1940 the directory lists D A McFadden at 1627 Adanac Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Daniel A McFadden there as the householder, a quartermaster. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Norma MacFadden at 2054 Dundas Street. The 1940 name section lists Gladys MacFadden at 183 East 27th Avenue, a housekeeper for C E W Schultze.

The 1940 name section lists Victor McFadden at 344 East Hastings Street, a fireman at Canadian National Steamships. J V MacFadden is listed at 2709 East Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James V MacFadden there as the householder, a trucker at the CPR. The 1940 name section lists Publications (Boys Sales Division) Macfadden at 513 Hamilton Street.

In 1940 the directory lists H S McFadden at 3827 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Hamilton S McFadden there as the householder, who worked for the Traders Financial Corporation.

In 1940 the directory lists J T MacFadden at 1831 William Street. The 1940 name section lists James T MacFadden there as the householder, a yardman at the CPR.

Today

183 East 27th, 344 East Hastings, 2709 East Pender, 917 Main, 2264 McLean Drive, 3827 West 12th and 1831 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 1627 Adanac (1963) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2054 Dundas, 513 Hamilton, 2071 Manitoba, 840 Nelson and 523 Powell, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
