What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a mechanic (2), a butler, a driver, a foreman, a laundress and a purchasing agent. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kitsilano (2), Grandview-Woodland, Riley Park, Shaughnessy, Victoria-Fraserview, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry A McCoy at 1064 Balfour Avenue, a butler for J V Rounsefell. The 1940 name section lists Alex McCoy at 1032 Barclay Street, a driver at Champion & White. The 1940 name section lists Carrie McCoy at 1136 Clark Drive, a laundress at Peerless Laundry.

R L McCoy is listed at 845 Davie Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Richard L McCoy there as the householder, a purchasing agent at Hayes Manufacturing. The 1940 name section lists Robert McCoy at 111 East 27th Avenue, a mechanic for R N Lovegrove.

In 1940 the directory lists A J McCoy at 1749 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists A James McCoy there as the householder, a mechanic at Stratchona Garage. The 1940 name section lists Winnifred McCoy at 801 Helmcken Street, widow of J.

M A McCoy is listed at 4567 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Martin A McCoy there as the householder, a foreman at UBC. J W McCoy is listed at 3450 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John W McCoy there as the householder, a bridgeman for W Greenlees, with Joyce McCoy, a student, and Keith D McCoy, a student.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Cath McCoy at 1891 West Broadway.

Today

1064 Balfour, 111 East 27th, 1749 East 49th and 3450 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4567 West 14th (1994) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1032 Barclay, 1136 Clark Drive, 845 Davie, 801 Helmcken and 1891 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
