Where the McAfees lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 13: an assistant (2), a driver (2), a cashier, a laborer, an operator and a police sergeant, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver Public Library. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A M McAfee at 1615 Cotton Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alex M McAfee there as the householder, a police sergeant at the City of Vancouver, with Mildred E McAfee. The 1940 name section lists Etta MacAfee at 4268 Dunbar Street, proprietor of Dunbar Children's Wear.

Mrs M E McAfee is listed at 175 East Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary E McAfee there as the householder, widow of J B, with Elizabeth A McAfee, a cashier at the Colonial Theatre. J MacAfee is listed at 1925 Franklin Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John MacAfee there as the householder, a laborer at BC Marine, with Henrietta L MacAfee, an operator at the BC Telephone.

H A McAfee is listed at 1052 Pendrell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry A McAfee there as the householder, a driver. Mrs J McAfee is listed at 1395 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jessie McAfee there as the householder, widow of G M, with Irene D McAfee, an assistant at the Vancouver Public Library, Jean A McAfee, a stenographer, and Jessie A McAfee, an assistant at the Vancouver Public Library.

C A McAfee is listed at 165 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Cecil A McAfee there as the householder, a driver at Granville Bros.

Today

1615 Cotton Drive, 175 East Broadway and 1395 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1395 West 14th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 165 West 20th (2018) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 4268 Dunbar, 1925 Franklin and 1052 Pendrell, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
