What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a chemist, a clerk, a cook, a manager, a nurse and a school teacher, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Maynard at 3080 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Maynard there as the householder, a cook. In 1940 the directory lists G E Maynard at 1915 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists George E Maynard there as the householder, a chemist at Boeing's.
In 1940 the directory lists F Maynard, rooms to let, at 993 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists Frank Maynard there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs I A Maynard at 1009 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Isabella A Maynard there as the householder, with C M Gertrude Maynard, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital, and Frances E Maynard.
The 1940 name section lists Arthur F Maynard at 1855 West 12th Avenue, a manager at Stacey's Ltd. A J Maynard is listed at 4144 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Augustus J Maynard there as the householder, retired, with Francis H B Maynard, a clerk, Kath V Maynard, a stenographer, Ken A Maynard, a student, and Marian C Maynard, a school teacher.
Mrs F Maynard is listed at 1934 William Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Florence Maynard there as the householder, widow of M J.
Today
1915 Haro, 1009 West 10th, 1855 West 12th and 1934 William still have their buildings from before 1946, 1009 West 10th and 1855 West 12th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 993 Hornby (1975) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3080 East 5th and 4144 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
