What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the nine: an employee, a machinist, a salesman and a writer. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G A Mawdsley at 2461 East 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists George A Mawdsley there as the householder, a machinist at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs C B Mawdsley at 766 East King Edward Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Constance B Mawdsley there as the householder, widow of W F.

The 1940 name section lists Mawdsley (no first name printed) at 1756 Nelson Street, with Alma Mawdsley, a salesman at Woodward's. J Mawdsley is listed at 1906 Sasamat Place in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert Mawdsley at 807 Thurlow Street, a writer.

W F Mawdsley is listed at 1947 Venables Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William F Mawdsley there as the householder, who worked for Sawdust Service (Vancouver). J V Mawdsley is listed at 1353 Walnut Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James V Mawdsley there as the householder, retired.

The 1940 name section lists Rosina J Mawdsley at 2145 West 37th Avenue, widow of W H.

Today

1947 Venables still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 2461 East 29th (1996) and 1353 Walnut (2010) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 766 East King Edward, 1756 Nelson, 1906 Sasamat Place, 807 Thurlow and 2145 West 37th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
