What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: an accountant, a conductor, a driver, an electrician, a machinist and a mechanic, among others. Two of them worked for Marks Bros. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Hettie Marks at 6036 Angus Drive, a stenographer at Singapore Spice Co. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Marks at 818 Burrard Street, an electrician. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S Marks at 643 East 23rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sarah Marks there as the householder, widow of W, with Victor W Marks, a driver at the Vancouver News Agency, and William T Marks, an accountant at BC Marine.

In 1940 the directory lists H E Marks at 2373 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Hueston E Marks there as the householder, of Marks Bros. The 1940 name section lists Percy A Marks at 3005 Grant Street as the householder, of Marks Bros, with Arthur S Marks, a conductor at the CPR. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Norah Marks at 1076 Seymour Street.

In 1940 the directory lists C Marks at 3825 West 30th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles Marks there as the householder, a machinist at Bearing Supplies House. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs N L Marks at 2188 West 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Nina L Marks there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Marks at 1011 West Broadway, a widow. The 1940 name section lists Norman Marks at 1256 West Pender Street, a mechanic.

Today

643 East 23rd and 3825 West 30th still have their buildings from before 1946; 6036 Angus Drive (2013), 2373 East 34th (2003) and 3005 Grant (2006) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 818 Burrard, 1076 Seymour, 2188 West 3rd, 1011 West Broadway and 1256 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
