What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 15: a billiard manager, an electrician, an ironworker, a laborer, a miner and a packer, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (4), Strathcona (3), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Fairview, Kitsilano and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G Marino at 2436 East 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Giacianto Marino there as the householder, an electrician, with Renaldo J Marino, an ironworker. In 1940 the directory lists O Marino at 2507 East 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Oliver Marino there as the householder, a planerman at BC Fir, with Carmine Marino, retired.

The 1940 name section lists Teado Marino at 531 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Frank Marino at 1636 East Pender Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists Edith Marino at 1360 Graveley Street, a packer at National Biscuit. The 1940 name section lists Louis Marino at 1375 Graveley Street, a billiard manager for Olympic Recreations.

The 1940 name section lists Oliver Marino at 296 Keefer Street. N Marino is listed at 1637 Kitchener Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Nick Marino there as the householder, a miner.

J Marino is listed at 717 Union Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Marino there as the householder, a laborer. A G Marin is listed at 1815 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Aristodemo G Marin there as the householder, a president at the Dodson Hotel Co.

Miss R A M Marin is listed at 1315 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Rosa A M Marin there as the householder, a school teacher at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists Pauline Marin at 949 West 27th Avenue, a widow.

Today

1375 Graveley, 717 Union, 1815 West 12th and 1315 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2436 East 3rd (1985), 1360 Graveley (1991) and 1637 Kitchener (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2507 East 3rd, 531 East Georgia, 1636 East Pender, 296 Keefer and 949 West 27th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
