The Marchants

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Marchant at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Marchants at 1058 Nelson in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a driver, a logger, a machinist, a plumber and a pressman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (4), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H Marchant at 2060 East 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). M Marchant is listed at 509 East 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Math Marchant there as the householder, a machinist at Boeing's. The 1940 name section lists A Marchant at 536 East 7th Avenue, a pressman at the Province, with Alice Marchant, widow of G.

In 1940 the directory lists G Marchant at 3364 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists George Marchant there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists F Marchant at 2916 Manitoba Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank Marchant there as the householder, retired.

The 1940 name section lists George Marchant at 2920 McGill Street, a plumber for R King. H Marchant is listed at 1058 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Marchant there as the householder, a driver, with Lily E Marchant and Robert C Marchant.

J Marchant is listed at 355 West 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Marchant there, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Calculating Machines Marchant at 119 West Pender Street.

Today

2916 Manitoba, 1058 Nelson and 119 West Pender still have their buildings from before 1946, 2916 Manitoba and 1058 Nelson on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2060 East 23rd (1997) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 509 East 6th, 536 East 7th, 3364 Main, 2920 McGill and 355 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
