What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a clerk, a laborer, a laundress, a meat cutter and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists T Mahoney at 910 Kingsway. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Mahoney there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists J Mahoney at 1344 Nelson Street. The 1940 name section lists Jerimiah Mahoney there as the householder, a meat cutter at Safeway.

In 1940 the directory lists W F Mahoney at 1826 Pandora Street. The 1940 name section lists William F Mahoney there as the householder, a laborer. The 1940 name section lists George Mahoney at 123 Powell Street. The 1940 name section lists R A Mahoney at 1765 West 10th Avenue, a salesman at Arrow Transfer.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs C C Mahony at 1695 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Clara C Mahony there as the householder, widow of E C, with Edna M Mahony, a clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce. In 1940 the directory lists J J Mahoney at 2985 West 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John J Mahoney there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists J W Mahony at 3020 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John W Mahony there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Rosella Mahoney at 715 West 8th Avenue, a laundress at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Hilda B Mahoney at 2072 West 8th Avenue.

Today

1695 West 11th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1930 by the City's record; 2985 West 37th (2012) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 910 Kingsway, 1344 Nelson, 1826 Pandora, 123 Powell, 1765 West 10th, 3020 West 5th, 715 West 8th and 2072 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
