What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: a carpenter, a carpets, a driver, a gardener, a machinist and a maid, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A P Madsen at 4290 Blenheim Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Peder Madsen there as the householder, a manager at A P Madsen & Co. In 1940 the directory lists J Madsen at 4494 Dumfries Street. The 1940 name section lists John Madsen there as the householder, a machinist at Boyles Bros, with Greta Madsen, a nurse.

The 1940 name section lists Elsie Madsen at 1762 East 1st Avenue, a maid for Rev C C Sorensen. J K Madsen is listed at 1339 East 33rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John K Madsen there as the householder, a gardener, with A Holger Madsen, a driver. B Madsen, in carpets, is listed at 2248 Granville Street in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Henning Madsen at 1904 Ogden Avenue as the householder, a waiter at the Vancouver Hotel. J B Madsen is listed at 1521 Salsbury Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jens B Madsen there as the householder, a carpenter, with Nels Madsen.

B Madsen is listed at 4549 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Bernard Madsen there as the householder, in carpets.

Today

4290 Blenheim, 4494 Dumfries, 1762 East 1st, 1339 East 33rd, 1521 Salsbury Drive and 4549 West 11th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 2248 Granville and 1904 Ogden, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
