What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 16: a clerk (2), a seaman (2), a chief engineer, an elevator operator, a mate and a proprietor, among others. Some worked for the same employer: four for Imperial Oil and two for Austin Hotel. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists L Macauley at 5358 Cecil Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Leonard Macauley there as the householder, a mate at Imperial Oil. In 1940 the directory lists W W MacAuley at 1965 Cornwall Avenue.

W W Macauley is listed at 635 East 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Warne B Macauley there as the householder, a chief engineer at Imperial Oil, with George R Macauley, a seaman at Imperial Oil, and John Macauley, a seaman at Imperial Oil. R H Macauley is listed at 375 North Kootenay Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard H Macauley there as the householder, retired.

G Macauley is listed at 2009 Renfrew Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists E H Macauley at 3463 Triumph Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward H Macauley there as the householder, proprietor of the Powell Electric, with Edith H Macauley, and Stan E Macauley, a clerk.

The 1940 name section lists Alex F McAuley there as the householder, a clerk at the Austin Hotel, with Annie McAuley, widow of D, and Robert H McAuley, an elevator operator at the Austin Hotel. In 1940 the directory lists R A Macauley at 3363 West 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert A Macauley there as the householder, a shopman at the Canadian (BC) Telephone.

Today

5358 Cecil, 635 East 22nd, 4294 West 11th and 1151 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1151 West 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3463 Triumph (2015), 3363 West 19th (1996) and 4144 Windsor (2001) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1965 Cornwall, 375 North Kootenay and 2009 Renfrew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
