What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a salesman (2), a seaman (2), a cook, a postman and a tailor. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (2), Grandview-Woodland (2), Riley Park (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A MacAskill at 1711 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alex MacAskill there as the householder, a seaman at the BC Coast Steamship Service. In 1940 the directory lists A Macaskill at 2264 East 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Angus Macaskill there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists N McCaskill at 2638 Glen Drive. The 1940 name section lists Norman McCaskill there as the householder, a tailor at the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1940 the directory lists A H MacAskill at 2570 Hemlock Street. The 1940 name section lists Alasdair H MacAskill there as the householder, a salesman for A J Forsyth.
The 1940 name section lists John McAskill at 2037 Parker Street, a seaman. The 1940 name section lists John D McAskill at 209 Prior Street, a cook. In 1940 the directory lists D A Macaskill at 434 West 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists D Allan Macaskill there as the householder, a postman.
In 1940 the directory lists D J Macaskill at 375 West 23rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Don J Macaskill there as the householder, a salesman at Beatty Bros. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E McCaskill at 765 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth McCaskill there as the householder, widow of D, with J Jean McCaskill.
Today
2638 Glen Drive, 2570 Hemlock, 2037 Parker, 434 West 20th and 375 West 23rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1711 East 34th (2005) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2264 East 7th, 209 Prior and 765 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
