A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Loftuses
In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at nine addresses
The directories print 15 people named Loftus at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Lofts. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Loftuses at 2702 East Pender in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a saleswoman (3), a clerk, a compositor, an employee, a laborer and an operator. Two of them worked for BC Telephone.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lillian M Lofts at 4512 Commercial Street, a saleswoman at Metro Stores. The 1940 name section lists Nellie Lofts at 1844 Comox Street, a saleswoman at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists J P Loftus at 358 East 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John P Loftus there as the householder, retired, with Irene Loftus, an operator at the BC Telephone.
In 1940 the directory lists F J Loftus at 2702 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank J Loftus there as the householder, a laborer, with Anne M Loftus, and Joseph B Loftus, who worked for the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists M Loftus at 932 Howe Street. The 1940 name section lists J Loftus at 122 Water Street, retired.
In 1940 the directory lists Miss K V Lofts at 3544 West 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Kate V Lofts there as the householder, a clerk, with Agnes Lofts. In 1940 the directory lists L M Loftus at 2072 West 1st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leonard M Loftus there as the householder, a compositor at the Sun, with Greta L Loftus, a saleswoman for F Irving.
The 1940 name section lists Joseph Loftus at 2829 Woodland Drive, retired.
Today
2702 East Pender, 122 Water and 2829 Woodland Drive still have their buildings from before 1946; 4512 Commercial (1993) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1844 Comox, 358 East 46th, 932 Howe, 3544 West 16th and 2072 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
