What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a laborer (2), a bookkeeper, a glazier, a helper, a machinist and a musician, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Lockwood at 1776 East 4th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Lockwood there as the householder, a machinist at the Ideal Iron Works. In 1940 the directory lists G W Lockwood at 3267 East Broadway; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George W Lockwood there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver, with Albert H Lockwood, a glazier at Black Bros Motor Products.
In 1940 the directory lists W H Lockwood at 1160 Kaslo Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter H Lockwood there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver, with John E Lockwood, a helper at the Burrard Dry Dock. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Lockwood at 1065 Pacific Street. The 1940 name section lists Adeline Lockwood there as the householder, widow of T.
In 1940 the directory lists J Lockwood at 902 West 23rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James Lockwood there as the householder, a bookkeeper. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M E Lockwood at 2506 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary E Lockwood there as the householder, widow of G F, with M Lois Lockwood, a saleswoman at Woodward's, and Marguerite A Lockwood, a musician.
The 1940 name section lists H L Lockwood at 845 West Pender Street.
Today
1776 East 4th, 3267 East Broadway and 902 West 23rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1160 Kaslo (1962) and 2506 West 8th (2007) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 845 West Pender, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 1065 Pacific, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
