What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: a stenographer (2), an agent, a collector, a commissionaire, a cook and a dressmaker, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Strathcona (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jane E Lock at 1335 Comox Street, a dressmaker. J D Lock is listed at 2523 Dundas Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John D Lock there as the householder, a salesman at London Fish.

A H Lock is listed at 1557 East 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alfred H Lock there as the householder. H Lock is listed at 3181 East Georgia Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry Lock there as the householder, a machinist at Empire Manufacturing.

A E Lock is listed at 5354 Inverness Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Lock there as the householder. C R Lock is listed at 1228 Pendrell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Chris R Lock there as the householder, an agent at Travelers Insurance.

The 1940 name section lists William Lock at 1755 Powell Street, a cook. In 1940 the directory lists K Lock at 406 Princess Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Kai Lock there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Lock at 256 Vernon Drive. The 1940 name section lists Mary Lock there as the householder, a widow. The 1940 name section lists Alice V Lock at 2143 West 36th Avenue, a stenographer for D P Ames, with F Molly Lock, a stenographer at Confederation Life. H Lock is listed at 1616 Yew Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Lock there as the householder, a commissionaire.

Today

2523 Dundas, 3181 East Georgia and 1616 Yew still have their buildings from before 1946; 1557 East 11th (1997) and 2143 West 36th (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1335 Comox, 5354 Inverness, 1228 Pendrell, 1755 Powell, 406 Princess, 256 Vernon Drive and 4213 West 15th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
