A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Lobbs
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses
The directories print eleven people named Lobb at seven addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Lobbs at 3006 West Broadway in 1940.

What they did

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Fairview (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Kerrisdale. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists B J Lobb at 4995 Chester Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bertram J Lobb there as the householder, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries. In 1940 the directory lists J F Lobb, a chiropodist, at 3026 Granville Street.
J F Lobb is listed at 1826 Ogden Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James F Lobb there as the householder, a chiropodist. Mrs E Lobb is listed at 1446 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Emily Lobb there as the householder, widow of P H, with Hilda I Lobb, a school teacher.
R H M Lobb is listed at 3036 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Richard H M Lobb there as the householder, a radio operator. F Lobb is listed at 2042 West 42nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Fletcher Lobb there as the householder, a machinist at Pumps & Power, with Muriel O Lobb, a stenographer at Toronto General Trusts.
W Lobb, a grocer, is listed at 3006 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Norman W Lobb there, a salesman for W Lobb, with Vernon C Lobb.
Today
2042 West 42nd still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record; 4995 Chester (2018) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3026 Granville, 1826 Ogden, 1446 West 12th, 3036 West 12th and 3006 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
