What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a manager (2), a proprietor (2), a building contractor, an engineer and a painter. Some worked for the same employer: three for Stanley Park Manor and two for Cambridge Apartments. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Shaughnessy (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Marpole and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In October 1909 J V & E Lightheart took out the permit to build a frame apartment house at 950 Bidwell Street. In 1940 the directory lists J V Lightheart at 950 Bidwell Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). By 1940 it is C D Lightheart. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Clarence D Lightheart there as the householder, an engineer at the Cambridge Apartments, with Jacob V Lightheart, proprietor of the Cambridge Apartments.

O R Lightheart, a building contractor, is listed at 5388 Cypress Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Oliver R Lightheart there, a building contractor, with Oliver L Lightheart, a student. W L Lightheart is listed at 1915 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists W Leslie Lightheart there as the householder.

J G Lightheart is listed at 2570 Hemlock Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jacob G Lightheart there as the householder, a manager for Renfrew Lodge. W A Lightheart is listed at 3638 Osler Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William A Lightheart there as the householder, proprietor of Stanley Park Manor.

Mrs L C Lightheart is listed at 1465 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Louise C Lightheart there as the householder, widow of G E, with Ralph Lightheart. F H Lightheart is listed at 3926 West 31st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick H Lightheart there as the householder, a painter at Stanley Park Manor.

J A Lightheart is listed at 698 West 70th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John A Lightheart there as the householder, retired. C V Lightheart is listed at 3827 West Broadway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Cecil V Lightheart there as the householder, a manager at Stanley Park Manor.

Today

5388 Cypress, 1915 Haro, 2570 Hemlock, 3638 Osler, 1465 West 14th and 3926 West 31st still have their buildings from before 1946, 3638 Osler on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 950 Bidwell (1991) and 3827 West Broadway (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 698 West 70th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
