What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: an attendant, a baker, a dentist, a fire captain, a helper and a machinist tender, among others. Some worked for the same employer: two for Canadian Boxes and two for Vancouver City. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Sunset (2), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Riley Park and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frank E Liddle at 2934 Birch Street, a salesman at Macaulay Nicolls Maitland. Mrs A W Liddle is listed at 789 East 52nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Agnes W Liddle there as the householder, widow of J D, with Elizabeth D Liddle, a helper at Canadian Boxes, and John Liddle.

J D Liddle is listed at 795 East 52nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James D Liddle there as the householder, a machinist tender at Canadian Boxes. F W Liddle, a dentist, is listed at 413 Granville Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists L E Liddle at 4571 James Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Laurie E Liddle there as the householder, proprietor of Laurie's Pie Co, with Florence Liddle, widow of F E, and Ralph B Liddle, a baker. In 1940 the directory lists A B Liddle at 1300 McLean Drive. The 1940 name section lists Andrew B Liddle there as the householder, a swamper at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists H Liddle at 3445 Pandora Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry Liddle there as the householder, a fire captain at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists F W Liddle at 1886 West 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Liddle there as the householder, a dentist.

In 1940 the directory lists A P Liddle at 755 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Andrew P Liddle there as the householder, an attendant at the Willingdon Service Station.

Today

3445 Pandora and 1886 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946; 789 East 52nd (1995), 795 East 52nd (1995), 4571 James (1999) and 755 West 23rd (2004) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2934 Birch, 413 Granville and 1300 McLean Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
