The Liddells

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at nine addresses

The directories print 15 people named Liddell at nine addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Liddells at 1380 Nanton in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: a clerk, a collector, a fireman, a grocer, a musician and a school teacher, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Marpole, Renfrew-Collingwood, Shaughnessy and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John M Liddell at 804 Burrard Street, a fireman at the City of Vancouver. G B Liddell is listed at 2306 Charles Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gilbert B Liddell there as the householder, a stevedore.

Mrs A F Liddell is listed at 1267 Kingsway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ada F Liddell there as the householder, widow of L E, with Cyril Liddell, a clerk.

R R Liddell is listed at 1380 Nanton Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert R Liddell there as the householder, a superintendent engineer at Canadian Pacific Steamships, with Edna C Liddell, and Gladys M Liddell, a stenographer. G Liddell is listed at 129 North Kootenay Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. D P Liddell, a grocer, is listed at 4106 Rupert Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David P Liddell there, a grocer.

Today

2306 Charles, 3342 Point Grey Road and 4106 Rupert still have their buildings from before 1946; 4512 Commercial (1993), 129 North Kootenay (1996) and 748 West 66th (1978) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 804 Burrard, 1267 Kingsway and 1380 Nanton, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
