Where the Lennoxes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a salesman (2), an oiler, a pastor and a serviceman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview (2), Downtown, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs D L Lennox at 1127 East 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Dora L Lennox there as the householder, widow of I W, with John R Lennox, retired. In 1940 the directory lists A D Lennox at 466 East 29th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Albert D Lennox there as the householder, an oiler at the BC Coast Steamship Service.

In 1940 the directory lists J C Lennox at 2623 East 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists J Carroll Lennox there as the householder, a salesman at General Paint, with Allan D Lennox. The 1940 name section lists Eugene Lennox at 575 East Hastings Street.

S A Lennox is listed at 2425 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sid A Lennox there as the householder, a salesman at Rogers Printing. The 1940 name section lists Winifred Lennox at 1662 Nelson Street, widow of G. The 1940 name section lists S John Lennox at 584 West 12th Avenue, a student.

M J Lennox is listed at 3948 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Morton J Lennox there as the householder, a serviceman at the Northern Electric. Rev H Lennox is listed at 3158 West 37th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Rev Harry Lennox there as the householder, a pastor at the Kerrisdale Presby Church.

The 1940 name section lists Wilhelmina Lennox at 1268 West Georgia Street.

Today

1127 East 13th, 466 East 29th, 2623 East 29th and 3948 West 20th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 575 East Hastings, 2425 Granville, 1662 Nelson, 584 West 12th, 3158 West 37th and 1268 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
