What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a salesman (3), a civil engineer, a domestic, a driver, an on active service and a packer. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur H Legge at 1749 East 56th Avenue, a civil engineer. A D Legge is listed at 2684 East 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arthur D Legge there as the householder, on active service, with Eleanor G Legge, a domestic.

Mrs E Legge is listed at 1689 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Legge there as the householder, widow of L L. H F Legge is listed at 3009 West 13th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harold F Legge there as the householder, a driver.

Mrs M Legge is listed at 3835 West 18th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mary Legge there as the householder, widow of H, with Richard D Legge, a salesman at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Alice Legge at 3521 West 28th Avenue, widow of W.

In 1940 the directory lists J C Legge at 2406 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John C Legge there as the householder, a salesman, with Frederick N Legge.

The 1940 name section lists Olive M Legge at 2627 West 7th Avenue, a packer at National Biscuit. G E Legge is listed at 1325 West 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George E Legge there as the householder, a salesman.

Today

2684 East 8th, 1689 Robson, 3009 West 13th, 3835 West 18th and 2627 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2627 West 7th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1749 East 56th (1985) and 3521 West 28th (1993) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3743 West 5th, 2406 West 7th and 1325 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
