The Layfields

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses

The directories print twelve people named Layfield at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Layfields at 545 East Cordova in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a fireman (2), a chauffeur, an employee, a helper, a mechanic and a proprietor, among others. Three of them worked for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, South Cambie, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs I C Layfield at 545 East Cordova Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Isabella C Layfield there as the householder, with Herbert A Layfield, a helper for B Clendon. In 1940 the directory lists R E Layfield at 3320 Heather Street. The 1940 name section lists Ralph E Layfield there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

The 1940 name section lists Cranston P Layfield at 969 Jervis Street, a salesman at Spencer's. H W Layfield is listed at 1945 Kitchener Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Howard W Layfield there as the householder, a chauffeur at BC Motor Transportation.

G H Layfield is listed at 2530 Kitchener Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George H Layfield there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Jean Layfield at 1906 Nelson Street, with Marie A Layfield, who worked for the BC Telephone.

In 1940 the directory lists N Layfield at 3919 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Noel Layfield there as the householder, a mechanic at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists H D Layfield at 3617 West 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry D Layfield there as the householder, proprietor of H D Layfield & Co, with Elizabeth E Layfield, widow of H H.

Today

2530 Kitchener and 3617 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 545 East Cordova (1975), 969 Jervis (1980), 1906 Nelson (1959) and 3919 West 13th (1996) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3320 Heather and 1945 Kitchener, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
