What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a waitress (2), a dish wiper, a printing, a proprietor, a salesman and a stenographer, among others. Some worked for the same employer: two for Empire Stevedoring and two for Vancouver General Hospital. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kitsilano (2), West Point Grey (2), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview, Marpole and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary C Lawler at 2538 Crown Street, widow of M C. The 1940 name section lists Agnes Lawler at 530 Hornby Street, a waitress at Good Eats Cafe. In 1940 the directory lists J H Lawler at 2224 Larch Street. The 1940 name section lists James H Lawler there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists W Lawler at 7529 Oak Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William Lawler there as the householder, a timekeeper at Empire Stevedoring, with Beatrice Lawler, a stenographer at Empire Stevedoring. The 1940 name section lists John R Lawler at 530 Robson Street, proprietor of the Frisco Clothing Exchange.

Today

2538 Crown, 2224 Larch, 1836 West 12th and 555 West 20th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2224 Larch and 1836 West 12th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 530 Hornby (1988), 7529 Oak (2007) and 4347 West 9th (2017) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 530 Robson, 1046 West 14th and 2834 West 33rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
